What on earth does Astrology have to do with Psychology?

Early cultures all over the world used the sun, moon, visible planets and constellations as timekeepers for survival activities such as migration, planting, and harvesting. The luminaries (sun and moon) and their light, darkness, and rhythms influenced the flow of life: when to act, rest, plant, or harvest.

Observing celestial patterns in this way informed a growth in consciousness awareness of how the cosmos not only mirrored the movements and elemental patterns of night and day, life and death, darkness and light on earth, but also within our bodies and in time. Fire, air, earth, and water and their corresponding characteristics with the seasons were also conceptualized in relationship to medical conditions and how to treat them.

Depth psychology pioneer, Carl Jung recognized that astrology encompasses the psychological wisdom of the ages. Just as Jung’s work on dreams, images, and symbolic thinking offers a framework for engaging with unconscious archetypes in our individual and collective psyches, planetary constellations were imagined, named and associated with specific characteristics and mythologies based on the energies and elements they symbolized, which infused them with symbolic potential for making archetypal meaning in our personal lives.

A natal chart is a unique snapshot of the planetary positions and energetic dynamics present at your specific time and place of birth within the cosmos. Exploring these interralational dynamics and how they show up in a particular life can offer an expanded sense of meaning to personal experiences, strengths, and challenges. Just as an individual human life moves through phases, cycles and energetic shifts within oneself, the planets also move according to their own particular rhythms and speed of movement in relation to one another - as is most evident in the cycles of the moon in relation to the sun. Beyond predicting outcomes and pigeonholing personalities into sun sign stereotypes, working archetypally and mythologically with astrology can reflect facets of yourself you may have never considered or imagined. The relational dynamics, placements and movements of the planets transiting through particular houses and signs can offer insights and understanding into working with your current life experiences and practical challenges. Working with planetary transits can also expand your intuitive ability and allow you to collaborate more directly with natural energetic elements in your nature, particularly when you are undergoing psychological work.
